Past Directors

Each year, The Windsor Kenneth Branagh Award for New Drama Writing attracts directors, both professional and amateur, who want to play a part in one of the few festivals in the UK which celebrates new writing talent.

Adam Leon

Adam trained at The Guildford School Of Acting

Adam is also a professional actor and part of his passion in theatre is the ability to cross over roles. He launched his own production company in 2014, SAS-productions, and has since directed two professional shoots with more lined up for next year along with a number of theatrical shows. He is really excited to present Best Served Cold at The Windsor Fringe 2015.

Chris Carr 

Chris has just completed directing his latest short spy film "The Dry Cleaner", which is now in post production for a festival release in 2016. Chris works as regular director for Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, directing MA & BA drama students on their final graduation films. Chris also likes to direct theatre and he was selected to direct the play "Driven" by prestigious "Off Cut" festival in 2012. "Driven" written by rising playwright Adam Usden, was given a five star review by the theatre review website "Remote Goat" and its star Andy Snowball went on to win "Best Actor" at the festival. 

Chris has also worked as a producer with his company Beyond Mirrors, recently completing their first feature film "How not to disappear completely" with writer & director Stuart J. Parkins. Previous to that film he has produced the short film "Victims" starring Hattie Morahan and Briana Corrigan. "Victims" writer Rick Hughes was nominated a "New Talent" award by BAFTA Scotland for his work on the film. Alesha Dixon came on as a Associate Producer to help complete the film. 

Chris has also worked as a Co-Producer on numerous projects; highlights include the music video "The Toadlickers" for Thomas Dolby, with Paul D Films. The video was nominated for two Webby Awards and Won a Gold G3 award. Another project Chris is proud of is the documentary "Scene from the other side" for Sky Arts with White Dolphin Films.

ANDREW C. Wadsworth

Adam Leon: trained at the Guildford School of Acting and has been directing theatre for the last six years. He has worked all over the UK and built a credible reputation as both an actor and director. It was during his training at The Guildford School of Acting that his passion for directing was inspired further by working with the vast array of talent associated with said School. He works all year round on various projects and new writing ventures. He particularly enjoys his youth work over the summer period. Sophie Gilpin: is Artistic Director of HeadFirst Productions and Director in Sophie GilpinResidence for the New London Opera Players. Having studied at the University of Warwick, Sophie was involved with the research & development for Sasha Wares’ production of Wild Swans for the Young Vic Theatre, and was Trainee Resident Director at the Kings Head Theatre. During this time his Kodak commercial won a KODAK Student Award in 1999.He has since directed several short films, music videos and idents for Davey Inc. which was nominated for The National Business Awards in 2005.His short film “Mr. Jones” has been selected for the Liquid Room, Video-Art & Architecture Event and by Saatchi &Saatchi for their New Directors Showcase 2009. Natalia Gleason: is Hungarian and graduated in theatre top of her year from the University of Surrey. She has been involved in a number of diverse theatrical projects both in the UK & Hungary: running drama groups for teenagers, being a young writer at Soho Theatre, London, to directing /producing shows & always looking for new challenges. “Theatre is my true passion in all its shapes and forms” She is now living & working in the USA.

Chloe Faine: trained at Bristol & London School of Musical Theatre. With directing credits including: A MidsummerNight’s Dream, Fiddler on the Roof, The Legend of King Arthur, Don Juan in Soho and Shared (a radio play starring Rula Lenska).

Anthony Shribshall: Runs his own productions company with many shows touring nationally & internationally. He is the former Artistic Director at Drayton Court Theatre London with numerous credits . Anthony is the Course Leader /Chair for Drama at Northampton Uni.. and has written/published on Samuel Beckett, Theatre d’Complicite’s Jos Houben, Harold Pinter and Vsevolod Meyerhold . He is also a Member of the Director’s Guild of Great Britain.

Simon Law: His work is well known both locally & internationally with his Director & Musical Director credits including: Annie, The Sound of Music, Oliver, The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe as well as pantomimes. In Spain film directing credits inc: Lord of the Flies, Once Bitten Twice Shy and musicals Grease and Bugby Malone. Simon was also principal franchisee for Stagecoach Theatre Arts School.

Bbarry McCormick's Picarry McCormick comes from a theatrical background, his grandfather, mother and father being actors. He went to RADA at the same time as Albert Finney & Peter O’ Toole etc. After a spell at Wimbledon rep, he went into films and ended up as an editor/dubbing editor on feature films at Pinewood, Elstree, Soho, Shepperton and abroad. Barry has directed over 35 productions, mainly for the Windsor Theatre Guild, Award winning Windsor Festival plays, Richings Park, The Slough Operatic Society and the Cookham Arts Festival.

Francis Watson has worked across the theatrical gamut embracing opera, musicals Commedia, Shakespeare and stand-up comedy. He has developed work with members of companies such as Trestle, Complicite and Horse and Bamboo. Directing credits: numerous. Francis has worked extensively with new writers through the London Playwrights Collective at Theatre 503 and the London Fringe. He studied Le Coq Technique under Monica Pagneux in Metz and won a Perrier nomination for comedy stand-up work.

Mark Holliday directed two of our winning plays “Mr. Percy & King Lear” by Kathleen Kiley(2009) and winning play “Don’t Open the Door” by Richard Roques ( 2006). He is a co-director with Center Stage Partnership, providing actors, facilitators. His directing & Stage credits are numerous.

Pete Gallagher has directed dozens of productions – drama, musicals and variety, many critically acclaimed and award nominated. Aged 25, he took charge of London’s Corona Academy and has since been Director of Musical Theatre in two colleges, and Head of Drama in another. He was a director of Miscellany Theatre Co. and co-founded GAJIT, a theatre master class company.. Pete has huge experience in selecting winning scripts.Writing, Theatre & Directing Credits: inc. Godspell, Cabaret Jesus Christ Super star, & many others. Resident drama coach on Any Dream Will Do for BBC1 training aspiring Josephs in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s TV talent show, as well as coaching on Strictly Come Dancing and Gladiators. Pete directed our winner “Fairy Lights” by Suzy Clements (2008) and our winning 2007 play “The Last Laugh” by Simon Lynn. He has been performing professionally since 1983. Directing: includes the critically acclaimed gothic-punk A midsummer Night’s Dream, the 5* musical at Edinburgh Fringe this year. Joerg Stadler: The Fringe were very happy to give Joerg the chance of his first directing work. He trained at the Lee Strasberg Studio London. Acting credits are numerous and inc: Revolver by Guy Richie , Saving Private Ryan by Steven Spielberg and Spy Game by Tony Scott. Major directorial influences: Charlie Chaplin, Francis Ford Coppola, Stanley Kubrick and Steven Spielberg.

Directors for 2006

Shane Davey served eight years and through two wars before returning to education: An A-level in Film Studies and an Animation Course where he specialised in direction. The British Council selected his graduation film for International Festival distribution. Since then he has shot low budget music videos, short films, test commercials and experimental work in film and photography. Emma Serlin left the Oxford School of Drama and straight away founded a theatre company in a disused factory in Primrose Hill. Since, she has directed to critical acclaim and won a Award for Best New Director for Lost Theatre Festival at The Courtyard Theatre. She is also moving into script editing for TV.

Directors for 2005

Donald Sturrock joined the BBC in 1983. There he made more than thirty documentary films for the Music and Arts Department including The Graham Greene Trilogy for BBC2’s ARENA series, which the Broadcasting Writers Guild voted Best Documentary of the year.

Sturrock left the BBC in 1992. Since leaving the corporation, he has written and directed a number of award-winning programmes, including a film about Roald Dahl for the BBC. Since then his credits include Little Red Riding Hood with Danny DeVito, Ian Holm and Julie Walters, a four-part television series with Placido Domingo, and the world premiere of the opera Fantastic Mr. Fox in Los Angeles. He is currently working on a new project for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

He has also written five opera librettos, his latest being based on Dahl’s Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, with his biography “Storyteller, The Life of Roald Dahl" being published in 2010 by Harpers Press and was BBC Radio 4’s Book of the Week www.musiclink.uk.net 

Nigel Lawson-Dick. 

His grounding as stage crew with The John Lewis Partnership’s Plays and Operas led to technical roles and directing. 

Credits: Woking, Bloomsbury and Steiner theatres, with his own company DIDELINE having presenting shows at South Hill Park and Nordern Farm.

John Bruce

As a freelance director, John has worked for all the major independent companies, as well as the BBC on some 120 plays, films and series. His credits are numerous and include :many with Emmy nominates, and Gold Medal for Best TV Drama at The Cannes Film Festival nomination. Having graduated from RADA-he has always been a passionate believer in the actors performance and that has been the bedrock of all his film & television work. John is a member of Directors UK & BAFTA

Peter Stallwood

directed “Fit Piece” , one of the 2004 finalists in our Drama Award He had performed on the amateur stage for over 50 years, playing King Lear in Reading 1997 and directed on both a professional and amateur capacity for over 20 years. His play “British Bulldog” was performed professionally as “The Rule of The Game” in 1992 and he was a member of Woking Theatre.
